In June 2020, Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) announced plans to commence upgrade of Lichota Airstrip in Migori County, at an estimated Ksh234million.
The project, which was to be undertaken by Halane Construction Limited, would see the runway upgraded to bituminous standards and a pavement to accommodate code IC aircraft constructed.
According to Western Regional Airports Manager Selina Gor, the project would also include construction of a new apron, security fence and patrol road around the facility.
The project took around one year to be completed.
On Wednesday, 13th September, the dream became a reality to the region when a maiden commercial plane touched down at the airstrip.

The flight, owned by Skyward Express, will fly from Wilson Airport in Nairobi to Migori every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, charging an estimated Ksh8,600 per flight.
